Lily Brisco vs MRS RAMSAY

Points of contrast.
Bound to Family vs free soul
Mrs Ramsay is depicted as a wcrking woman in the house,as not responsibility but as a duty.Because the
atmosphere is created in such a way that they should not create any problem or complain.found by the boss
(husband)Mr Ramsay.
Lily Bnscoe, too, chooses work and Art over getting married as she thought she,-need never marry any5ody
and she felt an enormous exultationl!.
..so that is marriage.Lily thought.a man and a woman looking at a girl throwing a ball...And suddenly the
meaning which for no reason at all as perhaps they are stepping out of the Tube or nnging a doorbell, descends
on people.making them symbolical, making them representative, came upon them and made them in the dusk
standing.loaking.the symbols of marriage, husband and wife."
Mrs Ramsay is.nevertheless,.the only one who believes in family and in fact uses all her charm to bring people
together. She is the luminous Angel of the House and an ardent matchmaker.Apart frorr her,no one else is
happy with marriage or family life.
i.Artistic llly and living Mrs.Ramsay.
ANthough it is cnly momentary.Mrs. Ramsay_felt alone in the presence of her old antagonist, life'.And Lily IS
drawn out of gossip, out of living.out of community with people into the presence of the formidable ancient
enemy of her....this form....roused one to perpetual combat."
ili.Exoress through emotions vs express through painting:
Mrs.Ramsay, who -often felt she was nothing but a sponge sopped full of human emotions. We find Mrs.
Ramsay bending all efforts to render her actions effective. The most important of them is her endeavor to supply
emotonal sustenance for her husband and children and it is found that when she dies they are left in a chaotic
confusion.Ironically,Mrs.Ramsay is seen'making'while Lily merely'tried'.
iv.Soothing vs harsh
Mrs.Ramsay"'s Attitude brings final reconciliation.Mrs.Ramsay is also upset in her own way. With her loving
heart and sympathetic bent of mind she wants to make people happy in this world and longs for protecting her
children from losing the contented innocence of childhood.
v.ldea about marriage:
Mrs.Ramsay is obsessed with trying to push people towards the altar of marriage. She wants Mr.Bankes and
Lily to get married Lily.though.prefers her Art,while Mr.Bankes.at the dinner table.thinks to himself:"How
trifing it all is,how bonng it all is.compared to the other thing-work."
Points of resemblance
i.Understand each other:Very often it is found that silence is more expressive and eloquent than words. And Lily
realises it fully She feels in greater communication with Carmichael than if they had spoken. There sitting on the
lawn in perfect silence they seem to understand each other perfectly well without exchanging even a singie word.
And in the final chapter of the novel Lily justly feels:.,They had not needed to speak. They had been thinking the
same thing and he had answered her without, her asking him anything".
ii.Like Response to Mr.Ramsay:
in the beginning of the third or final movement of the book we find Mr.Ramsay the widower coming to Lily
demanding sympathy. She really feels very helpless and words fail her in the beginning.Suddenly his boots
catch her eyes and she praises his boots. This brings great relief and Mr.Ramsay feels satisfied.Apparently
Lily's remarks may seem silly or comic.But_Mr.Ramsay smiled. His pall, his draperies,is infirmities fell from
him'.Thus it helped to establish perfect sympathy and understanding between Lily and Mr.Ramsay and Lily _felt
her eyes swell and tingle with tears'.
Canclusion:
Lily cannot have her final vision of life, her final epiphany, without Mrs.Ramsay.No matter how much she cries.
she will not bring Mrs Ramsay back to life:
For one moment she feit that if they both got up,here, now on the lawn, and demanded an explanation, why was
it so short, why was it so inexplicable, said it with violence.as two fully equipped human beings from whom
nothing should be hid might speak, then, beauty would form into shape;if they shouted loud enough Mrs.
Ramsay would return."Mrs.Ramsay!"she said aloud,"Mrs.Ramsay!"The tears ran down her face.(183)
